What is the best material to use for a driveway in the Atlanta climate? Which material is stronger, more durable (not always the same), less expensive, and the most attractive?
I was recently asked that question by a local builder, a rather prominant one in Atlanta, unfortunatley on his way down after a wild ride through the recent building boom. He is now shifting his focus from new construction to general contracting and rehab work. My first reaction was Concrete obviously, but then I admitted to myself that I had never actually sat back and considered both sides. Atlanta Driveways, Concrete vs Asphalt. At first thought this is a no brainer. All you need to do is look down the Atlanta streets. By far, Concrete Driveways are the norm.
Why Choose Concrete for a Driveway in Atlanta?
Well, why not… I guess we will hit on that later. Concrete has a very high compressive strength and, with a good solid base, can last a lifetime. In Atlanta we have good, compactable red clay on which to lay the concrete atop. Yes, so far so good, I see value in concrete. But, it gets better.
Concrete is also white, and therefore reflects the heat from the hot Atlanta sun. Not only does this make concrete more pleasant to walk on, it also retains its integrity in the heat. As of late, the finishes available for concrete offer unparralled variety. Thus far, it looks like concrete is stacking up pretty well, lets push farther.
Are there advantages to using asphalt for an Atlanta Driveway?
Most certainly, yes. Which material is less expensive and does the size of the driveway have an impact on the question? Actually, asphalt is considerably less expensive, and it doesn’t really lose margin as the size of the project increases. Typically, the cost of material is less for asphalt, as well as the labor costs. Job size won’t change these results dramatically. Hmmm.
Decorative Asphalt? There have been recent advances in technology recently that allow asphalt to be colored and stamped. Does it look as good as stamped concrete? No, sorry I can’t give it credit for that one.
Is asphalt strong, and will it outlast concrete? No sir; asphalt falls further behind. What else?
Does asphalt hold up better to salt and other de-icing materias used on the roads and tracked back to driveway. Well – possibly, but we are talking about Atlanta. What snow? We simply don’t get enough for this to matter, do we?
Atlanta Driveways, Concrete vs Asphalt? Do we have a clear winner?
Hands down, concrete seems to be the superior material for an Atlanta Driveway. But wait, we said that asphalt is less expensive. In this economic climate that may carry enough weight to put asphalt over the top. But, does it actually save money? Nope, it simply doesn’t hold up long enough, and has to be recapped every few years. In the not so long run, the up-keep on the asphalt sends the cost soaring. Therefore, no value is really there.
There is a clear winner: Concrete is the superior overall material for an Atlanta Driveway.
